This year my husband turned 40—and I knew I had to go all out. A milestone birthday like this deserves more than just a cake and a toast; it deserved a night filled with all of his favorite things and people.
For Matt, that meant bourbon. It’s his go-to drink, whether straight or mixed, and he’s always excited to try a new bottle. That was my jumping-off point: a Bourbon & BBQ birthday. From bourbon caramel sauce to a live performance by his best friend, everything was designed to celebrate him and create a night we’ll never forget.

Bourbon Themed Party Ideas for a 40th Birthday BBQ

Since bourbon was the obvious starting point, the theme came together quickly. The words “bourbon and BBQ” just felt right together—strong, warm, a little Southern—and it set the whole tone for the party. His birthday falls in early September, which usually gives us gorgeous backyard weather, so hosting at home made perfect sense.
Doing it at home wasn’t just budget-friendly, it also gave me the chance to bring in the rustic, Southern touches that made the party feel authentic. The menu leaned into slow-smoked meats and hearty sides, while the décor reflected that warm, country feel: bright sunflowers on the tables, rustic wood accents on the bourbon bar, and plenty of little details that tied everything back to the theme.
Invitations & Guest Experience for a 40th Birthday Party
When I started planning, I knew I wanted the invitations to set the tone right away. The invite is the first glimpse guests get of your event, so it has to show off the theme and get people excited.
For this party, I used Evite, which I love for how easy it makes designing and managing a guest list. Their built-in reminders take so much stress off my plate, and it keeps RSVP tracking super accurate. I chose one of their bourbon-themed templates, filled in the details, and then polished the wording with a little help from ChatGPT so it came across as both friendly and informative.

BBQ Food & Drink Ideas for a 40th Birthday Party
Appetizers & Grazing Table Ideas
Food was always going to be the centerpiece of this party, and I wanted guests to have something to snack on as soon as they arrived. To kick things off, I put together a grazing table that felt hearty but low-maintenance.

One of our friends made bacon-wrapped, buffalo chicken-stuffed jalapeños, and they disappeared almost instantly—they were that good! I set out a classic cheese and meat board with cubed cheeses, pepperoni, and salami, while my mom brought her pimento cheese dip with crackers (always a crowd favorite).

For something a little different, I added a butter board with four flavors of compound butter, paired with three variations of mini cornbread muffins. It was such a fun, Southern-inspired touch and gave everyone something warm and comforting to snack on.

The best part? Everything was simple to set out and didn’t need constant tending, which gave me the chance to mingle and actually enjoy the first hour of the party while guests settled in.
BBQ Main Dishes for a Birthday Party
The main dishes were the heart of our Bourbon & BBQ spread, and I couldn’t have pulled them off without help from family. Between ribs, brisket, pulled pork, pork belly, BBQ chicken, and bourbon-glazed meatballs, it was a feast worthy of the milestone.

My brother took charge of the ribs and pork belly, while my husband’s cousin’s husband smoked a brisket for 16 hours—truly melt-in-your-mouth delicious. My mom (who deserves a standing ovation for how much she helps at all my parties) made the pulled pork, served with brioche slider buns.

I handled the BBQ chicken legs and wings myself. Instead of grilling, I baked them on wire racks in the oven. It was quicker, less mess, and kept the chicken juicy without the risk of drying out. Since I needed everything ready to go at the start of the party, this method was the lifesaver.

For serving, I set up sterno racks and catering pans from Party Fair, keeping extra trays warm in the oven to swap in as needed. It made the buffet easy to manage and ensured the food stayed hot without me being stuck in the kitchen all night.

Classic Southern Side Dishes for a BBQ Party
No BBQ buffet feels complete without a spread of sides, and these did not disappoint. I wanted a mix of Southern comfort classics and a few family favorites.

The star, as always, was Paula Deen’s Lady and Sons baked mac and cheese. It’s a party staple in our house and never lasts long. To be safe, I scaled it up to a full sheet pan—over 8 pounds of mac and cheese! Even then, we were left with just a third as leftovers.

Another must-have was green beans with bacon. This is a dish I make for Matt almost weekly, so of course it had to make the birthday menu. To save time and dishes, I scaled it up and baked it in the oven instead of cooking it on the stovetop.

My mom rounded out the spread with baked beans, corn salad, and two kinds of cornbread, all of which fit perfectly with the Southern theme. And for coleslaw, we ordered from a local spot we love because, honestly, they just do it better than I ever could.

Bourbon-Themed Desserts & Birthday Cake Ideas
The dessert table turned out to be a true showstopper, filled with both old favorites and new creations: brown butter chocolate chunk cookies, maple bourbon cake pops, bourbon chocolate chip cheesecake bites, chocolate “cigar” pretzels, and a maple bourbon pecan cake designed to look like a whiskey barrel.

Cake pops have been a staple at my parties for the past 15 years, so of course they had to make an appearance. I always tailor the flavor and color to the theme, and for this one I created a brand-new recipe: maple bourbon cake pops. They were a fun nod to the theme, and I’ll be sharing the recipe in a separate post.

Cheesecake is Matt’s all-time favorite dessert, so I couldn’t imagine not having it on the table. I found a recipe for bourbon chocolate chip cheesecake bites that was easy to make, simple to cut, and absolutely delicious—they were one of the first things to disappear. You can grab that recipe here!

One of the sweetest touches came from Matt’s aunt, who makes incredible chocolates. She surprised us with candy “cigars” made from chocolate-covered pretzel rods. They looked clever and fit the bourbon-and-cigar vibe perfectly.
To tie everything together, I made my go-to bourbon caramel sauce, which guests drizzled over their treats. It’s a recipe I’ve used for years and one I always come back to.
And of course, the centerpiece: the cake. My mom outdid herself with a maple spice cake filled with pecan bourbon filling, frosted with bourbon buttercream, and finished with chocolate fondant. She even designed a custom whiskey-style label in Canva to wrap around the cake. The final touch was topping it with mini bourbon bottles and a couple of the chocolate cigars—an absolute masterpiece and the perfect focal point for the dessert table.
DIY Bourbon Bar, Sangria, and Party Drinks

Of course, the drinks had to live up to the Bourbon & BBQ theme. I set up a self-serve bourbon bar stocked with a variety of bottles and plenty of garnishes. To create a rustic look, I used wood rounds we had saved from my baby sprinkle—they added height and warmth to the table and perfectly showcased the bourbons. And to make it even more special, I designed custom etched bourbon glasses for the occasion, which doubled as both barware and memorable keepsakes for guests.

Since good bourbon can get expensive, I encouraged guests to bring a bottle to share. It turned out to be such a fun idea—by the end of the night, Matt had 14 new bottles to try! To round out the bar, I added a tiered stand with homemade simple syrup, fresh orange juice, and garnishes like my boozy bourbon cherries and brûléed orange slices. A cocktail shaker and strainer sat nearby so guests could mix their own creations.

The table also featured two handmade touches: custom bourbon glasses I etched for the occasion and a wooden “Bourbon Bar” sign I designed (both of which I’ll share more about in upcoming posts).

For the non-bourbon crowd, I set up a sangria station with my go-to fall recipe: bourbon apple cider sangria. I made two full dispensers, and it’s a good thing I did—one was gone just three hours into the party! To tie it all together, I added custom wine glasses I made for the table.

And of course, no party of mine is complete without my famous ice cream shots. They’ve become a tradition over the years, and I always try to customize the flavor to fit the theme. This time I went with bourbon and salted caramel, using Baileys Salted Caramel and a splash of good bourbon. I coated mini ice cream cones with Magic Shell, poured in the shot, and topped each with whipped cream. They were just the right size and such a fun treat for guests.
Bourbon-Themed Party Decorations
The vision for this party was rustic but fabulous. I anchored the look with black and gold, which felt celebratory without being too formal. For the tables, I found black cloths with gold “40th” details on Amazon. They instantly dressed up the space and tied in the milestone theme.

For centerpieces, I repurposed empty Maker’s Mark bottles, filling them with warm fairy lights (Grab them on Amazon right here!). Once the sun went down, they gave each table a beautiful glow. But I knew I needed a pop of color, and that’s where the sunflowers came in. They fit the Southern vibe perfectly and looked stunning tucked into slim dollar-store vases behind the bourbon bottles. It was a simple, budget-friendly idea that had a big impact.

I also experimented with balloon towers for the yard. I didn’t love the stands I tried this time, but I’ve already found better-reviewed ones on Amazon to use for future parties. The décor kit I ordered also came with a balloon arch, gold swirls, and whiskey-themed cutouts. (Click here to order one of these kits on Amazon). The arch looked great but would’ve baked in full sun, so I skipped it at the last minute (and kind of wish I hadn’t—lesson learned!).

The signs were some of my favorite touches. I designed them with my Cricut, including a custom bourbon bar sign that I gave to Matt as a keepsake. It’s now one of his favorite pieces of décor in the house.

Since the party started in the late afternoon and went into the night, lighting was a must. I strung globe lights across the yard using tall outdoor poles, and it created the perfect warm, cozy glow for guests to mingle under. These two items—string lights and poles—are honestly my top party must-haves now. I’ve used them for several events, and they always transform the space so easily. Fun Entertainment Ideas for a 40th Birthday Party

This party wasn’t a total surprise for Matt—he knew the date, time, and that it would be at our house—but I kept all the details under wraps. That way, the theme, décor, and special touches still felt like surprises to him (and they did!).

Live Music for Backyard Parties
The biggest surprise of the night was a live performance by Matt’s best friend and his sister. He’s been best friends with Matt since they were four, and the two of them perform together in a band. They’re well-known in our area from festivals and parades, and they graciously agreed to play the first hour of the party. His friend even put together a custom playlist just for Matt. Seeing his best friend and sister perform live in our backyard was such an emotional, unforgettable moment—he was completely blown away.

DIY Yard Yahtzee for Party Entertainment
We’re a Yahtzee family, so I knew Yard Yahtzee would be the perfect outdoor game. And since this is a DIY blog, of course I had to make my own oversized dice! Guests loved it, and it was a fun activity between the live music and trivia. (You can find my full step-by-step guide on how to make your own Yard Yahtzee set here.)

Milestone Birthday Trivia Game Idea
After dessert and coffee, I kicked off a trivia game to celebrate Matt’s life and milestones. I mixed personal questions with a few pop culture ones, and ChatGPT even helped me brainstorm some of them. For every correct answer, guests received a token printed with photos of Matt through the years. At the end, the top five winners took home bourbon- and smoke-themed prizes. It was such a fun way to laugh, reminisce, and celebrate him. (I’ll be sharing how to set up your own trivia game in a separate post.)

Cigar Bar Setup for Backyard Parties

To finish off the evening, my dad set up a cigar bar by the firepit. Cigars have been something he and Matt have bonded over for years, so this was a really meaningful detail. He even ordered custom cigar labels that read “Matt’s 40th,” which made the whole setup feel extra special. Guests gathered around the firepit with their cigars, and it was the perfect ending touch to the night.

Tips for Hosting a 40th Birthday BBQ Party
Looking back, this party came together so smoothly because of the planning I put in ahead of time. (If you want to dive deeper into my full process, I share it in my Step-by-Step Party Planning post.) But here are a few of my favorite tips for hosting a milestone celebration:
✨ Pick a theme that fits the honoree.
Start with what they love most—whether it’s a favorite drink, hobby, or even a favorite movie. When the theme reflects them, every detail feels more personal and meaningful.
✨ Do as much prep ahead as possible.
Trust me, your future self will thank you. Having food, décor, and little details prepped in advance takes so much stress off on the big day and lets you actually enjoy the celebration.
✨ Think about guest comfort.
Besides the honoree, your guests are the heart of the party. Make sure bathrooms are stocked with hand towels and extra toilet paper, set up self-serve food and drink areas, and think about small touches that make people feel at ease.
✨ Build in surprises and personal touches.
From trivia to custom signs to thoughtful centerpieces, it’s the little things that people remember. They may not talk about them as much as the big showstoppers, but trust me—guests notice those thoughtful details, and they’re what make your party stand out.
