When our son was turning four, I had a few birthday themes in mind—some I’d been waiting years to bring to life. A carnival-themed party was one of them! This was finally my chance to go all out with bold colors, vintage-style signs, fun games, and DIY touches at every turn.

I’ve always wanted to throw a backyard carnival party, and this was the perfect excuse. From the moment guests walked in, I wanted it to feel like a mini midway had popped up just for them—and that’s exactly what we created.
We hosted the party right in our backyard and transformed the space into a festive, family-friendly carnival. There were handmade booths, budget-friendly decorations, classic carnival snacks, and plenty of interactive stations to keep the kids engaged all afternoon.

Carnival Birthday Party Ideas for Kids
A carnival theme is such a fun choice for any birthday celebration, and June turned out to be the perfect month for it. Of course, this theme works beautifully any time of year—but for us, a warm-weather backyard party felt just right.
We take a lot of pride in our home and love hosting, so using our backyard as the party space was a no-brainer. I set up all the carnival games along the back fence on long folding tables, which ended up creating the perfect backdrop for the entire day.
To stay within budget—and to actually enjoy the experience—we kept the guest list to just family and a few close friends. It was the best decision. I had big plans for this party and had to lean into all my favorite budget-friendly mom tricks to pull it off just how I envisioned.
The kids had an absolute blast playing all the games and enjoying the carnival-themed treats! Keep reading to see all the DIY details that made this party extra special.
DIY Carnival Decorations on a Budget
To truly bring the carnival theme to life, I had to do some serious brainstorming! I wanted to focus on the most iconic carnival elements—ones I could realistically pull off while sticking to a tight party budget.
As usual, our dining room became the main food setup area. I love making a big splash in that space with decor! (If you’ve seen our dinosaur party, you know what I mean—check it out here: Dinosaur Birthday Party Ideas for a Jurassic Celebration
Themed Carnival Snacks and Treats Under the Big Top
The best way I could bring the carnival magic indoors was by creating a “Food Under the Big Top” setup. I knew I had to turn our dining room ceiling into a DIY circus tent—and it turned out even better than I imagined!
This project was surprisingly easy and didn’t require many materials—just a little patience during setup. I ended up using three rolls of each color to fill our space, but the exact amount may vary depending on your room size.
Here’s what you’ll need to recreate the look:
- Red crepe paper streamers
- White crepe paper streamers
- Clear thumbtacks
- Scissors

The result? A total WOW moment for all our guests. This ceiling setup became a major conversation starter—and I’ll be honest, I was really proud of how it turned out.
💡 Pro Tip: The cost of a helium tank is outrageous, right? Instead of filling balloons, I use balloon garland strips and a balloon air pump to create clusters that can be hung on walls or above tables.

Fun Carnival Games for a 4-Year-Old Party
We designed a series of DIY carnival games and set them up boardwalk-style along our back fence. These games were a total hit—kids and adults alike had a blast playing, laughing, and even challenging each other for fun.
One thing I knew going in: I wanted every game to be easy to reset after each play. During my party research, I kept seeing the same ticket-based setups—where kids either paid tickets to play or earned them as rewards and then traded them in for prizes. While that’s a super cute idea, it just didn’t fit our vibe.

I like to enjoy my parties right alongside our guests. I’m not a fan of running around all day managing stations or keeping score. So instead, I focused on creating games that were self-serve, easy to manage, and fun for everyone. Everything was set up ahead of time, ready to go—no micromanaging required.
Let’s dive into the games we created and how you can recreate them for your own carnival birthday party!

📸 Photo Booth
I absolutely loved this photo booth backdrop! It fit the carnival theme perfectly and gave us some of the funniest, most memorable pictures—ones we’ll be laughing at for years to come.
I found the backdrop on Amazon, and it was such a great addition to the setup. Want to grab one for your party too? Click here to check it out!

I used two string light poles (you can also find those here on Amazon), I also mention them in my blog post: 100 Amazon Finds for Hosting a Party
🏈 Football Toss
The football toss was an easy choice—it’s low-maintenance and doesn’t require much reset between turns. Perfect for a DIY carnival game! For the footballs, I picked up a few small ones at the dollar store.
They were the perfect size for little hands—ideal for our group of mixed-age kids at a 4-year-old birthday party. I didn’t want any of the games to feel too hard or frustrating, so this one was just the right balance of fun and achievable.

I made the target ring using a pool noodle and hung it using the same string light poles I used for the photo booth. These poles are seriously amazing—I use them all the time and highly recommend them. (You can grab the 4-Pack 10Ft String Light Poles here.)

💦 Water Gun Shootout
Whenever we visit a carnival or boardwalk, the water squirt games are always my favorite. So of course, I had to recreate a version of that for our backyard party. The challenge? I needed something that 1) wouldn’t make a huge mess, 2) was easy to reset, and 3) could be played without adult supervision.
Here’s what I came up with: a DIY water gun shootout game that checks all the boxes!
Materials you’ll need:
- One 2×4 piece of wood
- Golf tees (however many you’d like to set up)
- Ping pong balls
- Water squirt guns
My wonderful husband helped bring this idea to life by building the base. He drilled holes in the wood to hold the golf tees. Before inserting them, we added a little wood glue to the holes or the bottoms of the tees to make sure everything stayed secure during play.
To play, just balance a ping pong ball on each tee and let the kids take turns trying to knock them off with a water gun. Easy to set up, easy to reset, and tons of fun!

🎡 Spin Wheel Game
Who doesn’t love a spin wheel game at the carnival? I had a vision for this one, and I was determined to make it happen. After a little research—and a lot of winging it—I pulled together this awesome DIY version using only materials I already had in my garage. That’s right… this one cost me nothing to build!
Here’s what I used:
- Foam core board for the wheel
- Cardstock for the colored sections and letters
- Flattened cardboard boxes, glued together and spray painted
- Wooden dowels for the spokes
To make it extra special, I used the birthday boy’s name for the letters around the wheel. We also created a prize board in front using poker chips as markers, which added a fun interactive twist.
This game was a huge hit, and I’ll be sharing a full DIY tutorial in an upcoming post so you can build your own spin wheel game too!

🤡 Can Knockdown (Clown Edition!)
I gave the classic can-knockdown game a fun twist by turning it into a Clown Knockdown! This was such a simple game to put together, and it fit the carnival theme perfectly.
All I did was save a few cans from dinner, then wrap each one with white paper printed with clown faces. I used rectangular sheets to fit the cans and glued them in place—it was quick, easy, and super cute.
I chose to theme this game around clowns for a few reasons: nothing says carnival quite like clowns, and since we weren’t hiring a clown for the party, I wanted to sneak them in somehow. This felt like the most fun and kid-friendly way to do it!

⭕ Ring Toss
You’ve gotta love a classic ring toss, right? This game is always a crowd-pleaser, and it added such a fun, colorful touch to our carnival setup.
I started saving wine bottles a few months before the party, and a few generous friends and family members donated their empties to help me fill out the display. I wanted the setup to pop visually, so I spray painted half of the bottles blue and the other half red, then arranged them in an alternating pattern. It came out so cute!
The plastic rings I used were a perfect fit for the game and just the right size for little hands. You can grab the same ones I used here: Click to shop the rings on Amazon.

🐠 Fish Bowl Toss
The fish bowl toss was such a hit! It’s a carnival classic and so easy to recreate at home.
I grabbed a bunch of small glass vases from the Dollar Store—they were the perfect size for this game. And the best part? I’ve now tucked them away to use as future centerpiece vases, which makes this setup a great little investment for other events down the road.
To complete the game, I ordered a set of plastic fish from Amazon (click here to shop them) and picked up a pack of ping pong balls. That’s all it took, and we were ready to play!

🍭 Guess How Many
This was such a fun way to keep everyone engaged toward the end of the party—and bring out a little friendly competition!
The Guess How Many game was super easy to put together. I picked up a giant mason jar from Michaels and filled it with Dum Dum lollipops—117 to be exact. (Pro tip: make sure to count as you fill your jar and write the number somewhere safe. I wrote mine on the inside of the lid!)
To make it more exciting, I offered prizes for the top three closest guesses:
- The top two prizes were handmade goodies from my crafting business (you can shop my Etsy shop here or click the “Shop” link in the menu).
- The third prize was a simple but fun find from the Dollar Store.
You can customize the prizes however you want—just keep it light! Your guests will be thrilled just to have guessed right.

🍿Themed Carnival Snacks and Treats
Food is one of the easiest—and most fun—ways to bring a party theme to life! I started by making a long list of classic carnival and fair foods, then scaled it back based on what we could realistically pull off, what fit our party budget, and what would be the most doable on party day.
Thankfully, my wonderful husband volunteered to man the grill, so of course hot dogs and burgers were a must. Below, I’ll break down our full carnival party menu, including all the treats and easy crowd-pleasers we served.Food is the easiest way to bring a theme to life! I started by creating a long list of carinval and fair fodder and treats. Once that list is done I start to scale back to what I can accomplish, what makes sense for our budget, and what is the easiest to do. My lovely husband volunteered to grill so of course hot dogs and bugers were going to be on the menu. I’ll break down our whole menu below.
🍔 Main Dishes
We kept the menu simple, fun, and crowd-friendly, with carnival staples and a few creative twists.
🍔 Sliders & Hot Dogs
Burgers and hot dogs on the grill were a must—but instead of full-size burgers, we went with sliders. They were easier to prep, perfect for little hands, and a total hit with our guests. Hot dogs, of course, are always a winner for both kids and adults. They’re quick to grill and always one of the first things to disappear!
🌽 Mini Corn Dogs
Corn dogs are a carnival classic, but let’s be honest—a full-size corn dog is a lot, especially with so many other tasty foods around. So I picked up frozen mini corn dogs from Lidl and popped them in the oven just before the party started. They came out hot, golden, and ready to serve when we called everyone to eat.

🌮 Walking Taco Station
The biggest hit of the day? Our walking taco bar! Some guests already knew what walking tacos were, but others needed a little guidance—so I made a cute sign to explain the steps.

I grabbed a variety pack of mini chip bags so guests could choose their favorite base. Then I prepped two kinds of taco meat:
- Ground beef seasoned taco-style
- Diced chicken breast with taco seasoning
To keep the meats warm without mixing, I placed both in a slow cooker with a DIY divider made from cardboard wrapped in several layers of foil. It worked perfectly!
We also laid out a full spread of toppings:
- Shredded cheese
- Diced tomatoes
- Diced bell peppers
- Shredded lettuce
- Black olives
- Salsa & sour cream
This setup was such a hit—everyone loved customizing their own walking taco, and it was a super fun way to serve a crowd.

🍭 Sweets & Treats
What’s a carnival party without fun and festive desserts?
🍬 Cotton Candy Favors
Cotton candy is such a staple of any carnival, I knew I had to include it. While I would’ve loved to rent a machine, it just wasn’t in the budget—and the ones I found on Amazon felt too small for our crowd. (If you still want to check one out, here’s the machine I found on Amazon.)
Instead, I grabbed four different flavors of cotton candy from Five Below and split them into individual clear treat bags. Using my Cricut, I designed custom labels and stapled them to seal each bag. They looked adorable and were a total hit with the kids!

🍡 Cake Pops
Cake pops are kind of my thing, and for this party, I knew churro cake pops were the flavor to go with. They were a huge hit—and so delicious. A recipe post is coming soon, so make sure you’re on my email list to be the first to know when it drops!

🥨 Chocolate-Covered Pretzels
One of our family members makes the most delicious, beautiful chocolate-covered pretzels—and luckily, she always brings a tray to our parties. They’re always one of the first things to disappear, and this time was no different!

🎂 Carnival-Themed Cake
And the cherry on top? This unbelievable carnival cake made by my mom! She truly outdid herself.
- The “popcorn” was made from mini marshmallows dyed yellow with food coloring
- The “ice cream” scoop was stiff buttercream
- She even topped it with carnival-style lollipops from Amazon
I’ll be sharing all the cake details in a future article because this one deserves its own post!
