How to Host the Perfect Backyard Movie Nights (Our Favorite Summer Tradition)
Backyard movie nights are one of our absolute favorite summer traditions—there’s just something magical about watching a movie outside under the stars! It’s a fun and budget-friendly way to bring your family and friends together, and with a few simple supplies, you can turn your yard into an unforgettable outdoor movie night experience.

How Our Backyard Movie Nights Began
It all started on a warm summer evening by the fire pit. While we were roasting marshmallows, my husband casually said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have an outdoor TV out here?” We weren’t about to mount a TV on the fence, but we did hop on Amazon and order a projector and screen. And just like that, backyard movie night was born!

What began as a spontaneous idea has grown into our favorite way to spend summer nights. I even set up a little Facebook group to invite friends and neighbors—and now I’m sharing everything we’ve learned so you can start your own outdoor movie night tradition, too!
How to Set Up an Epic Backyard Movie Night

🏕️ Choose the Perfect Spot
We use the sloped part of our backyard that faces the fence—perfect for setting up a screen.
🪑 Get Comfy with Seating
Throw some blankets and pillows on the grass for the kids, and let the grown-ups bring lawn chairs. It doesn’t have to be fancy to be fun!
📽 Set Up the Projector & Screen
We use this projector that easily hooks up to an iPad or Apple TV, which makes setup quick and painless—huge win when you’re juggling snacks and kids! It came with a screen that worked fine at first, but it ended up feeling a little too small for our space. We eventually upgraded to this bigger screen, and honestly, it made such a difference. The picture was way clearer, and everyone could see without crowding together. My husband just added a couple hooks to the fence to hold it up, and boom—instant outdoor theater!

🔊 Upgrade the Sound
At first, the projector’s built-in speaker did the job, but we eventually added this small soundbar, and it made such a big difference—way better volume and clarity, especially when there’s background noise (like kids giggling or crinkling snack bags!).

Snack Ideas for Your Summer Outdoor Movie Night
Let’s be honest, snacks are half the fun of any movie night—and backyard movie nights are no exception! Here’s how we set the scene for the perfect snack bar:

🍿 Popcorn Machine
We first used a popcorn machine for our son’s [click here to check our baseball-themed birthday party] and it was such a hit, we’ve been using it all summer long! If you’re looking to add that nostalgic movie theater touch to your next party, [this is the one we recommend]. You’ll also need popcorn kernels and oil—this bundle lasted us all summer!

🌽 Popcorn Topping Bar
Set out seasoning shakers (ranch, white cheddar, cinnamon sugar—you name it!) and let everyone customize their popcorn.

🍬 Movie Candy & Themed Drinks
Classic movie candy is a must. Along with the snacks, we serve up fun drinks like soda, lemonade, and juice boxes—and on themed nights, we match them to the movie too!
Why You’ll Love Backyard Movie Nights
