Under the Sea Party Decor Ideas for a Magical Mermaid Birthday
To bring Ariel’s world to life, I focused on vibrant, ocean-inspired decorations that transformed our space into an under-the-sea wonderland. A shimmering tinsel backdrop created the illusion of rippling water, while clusters of clear balloons—tied with fishing line and arranged in different sizes—looked just like floating bubbles. (Huge thank you to my dad for helping bring this magical scene together!)

Under-the-Sea Candelabra Centerpiece for a Little Mermaid Party
One of the standout pieces on our party table was a custom DIY mermaid candelabra that added the perfect whimsical touch. After a few trips to antique shops, I finally scored the perfect base. I hot-glued kitchen utensils around the arms using a mix of hot glue and E6000 for extra hold. Once everything was secure, I spray-painted it a soft ocean blue, then sponge-painted layers of silver and darker blue for added depth. Pearls and seashells were the final magical touches, giving it a true under-the-sea sparkle.

Transform Windows into Under-the-Sea Scenes
To complete the underwater look, I covered the windows with layers of sheer blue material, creating a soft, ocean-like glow in the room. Fish-shaped decorations hung from the ceiling and throughout the space, giving the illusion of swimming sea life. This easy DIY decor made guests feel like they had truly stepped into an under-the-sea adventure—perfect for any Little Mermaid birthday party!

DIY Mermaid and Pirate Activities Your Party Guests Will Love
No birthday party is complete without fun, hands-on activities to keep guests entertained! We planned a mix of mermaid- and pirate-themed experiences that were perfect for a range of ages—and a total hit with both boys and girls. From dress-up stations to treasure hunts, these DIY activities added an extra splash of magic to the party.
Mermaid and Pirate Name Boards
Guests were greeted with name boards that displayed whimsical mermaid and pirate names. These were printed from a quick online search and mounted on decorated boards to match the theme.

Mermaid Wands, Pirate Patches & Face Paint Fun
For our hands-on craft activity, I made DIY mermaid wands for the girls and provided pirate eye patches for the boys—both simple, themed party favors that doubled as fun accessories. To add a little magic, we set out hair chalk so the girls could give themselves colorful “mermaid hair.” One of the highlights was when my cousin joined in to offer face painting for all the kids, adding a creative and personal touch to the party.
I even crafted a special mermaid wand just for my daughter, and five years later, it still has a special place in her room—a sweet reminder of the magical day!

Ocean-Themed Sand Art: Craft + Party Favor in One!
Sand art was both a creative activity and a take-home party favor, and it fit our under-the-sea theme perfectly! I ordered colorful sand and ocean-themed containers from SandArtSupplies.com (highly recommend them!). The kids had a blast layering their own unique designs—and the finished jars made adorable keepsakes.

Dressing the Part: Mermaid Birthday Party Outfits
To make the day even more magical, our whole family dressed the part! I handmade my daughter’s custom mermaid shirt (before I had a Cricut!) and found the perfect mermaid-themed pants on Amazon to complete her outfit. My husband and I also joined in with themed shirts that matched the under-the-sea vibe—it was a simple way to add extra personality and excitement to the celebration.
Her exact pants are no longer available, but here’s a similar pair on Amazon that would be just as adorable!

Delicious Mermaid-Themed Desserts and Sweet Treats
The treat table was truly a showstopper! My mom wowed everyone with a stunning Little Mermaid-themed cake that tied the whole party together. We also served up a variety of ocean-inspired sweets, including cupcakes, Rice Krispies treats, and chocolate-covered Oreos—all homemade and decorated to match the under-the-sea theme.

The chocolate-covered Oreos were topped with sea shell molds and edible pearls.
DIY Candy Bar Party Favors Station
One of the biggest hits of the party was our interactive candy bar station! I set up a colorful spread where guests could scoop their favorite sweets into little favor bags to take home. It was a fun, hands-on activity that kept the kids entertained and doubled as a personalized party favor—easy to set up and always a crowd-pleaser!
